Manga Review!
(3.5 stars)
I was reaaaally hoping this book would make me cry, because it caused so many other reader to weep like little babies, and I love sad books........
Frankly, the only reason I'm crying is because it was So. Disappointing.
I guess I should probably tell you first and foremost that I am not a huge manga and/or anime fan. I'm just not. I've tried quite a few volumes in the past and they just weren't really my cup of tea. They were either super gory, gross, and/or sexual...Or else, completely childish, innocent and Boooooring with a capital B.
I gotta say, if I had to choose, Orange is definitely more of the second option... Example,
It's supposedly a 'romance' and yet in the entire volume no one kisses. LITERALLY no one. I think there's maybe two scenes in the entire thing where people hold hands. That's noooot a very believable romance between hormone-infested teenagers. Just sayin'.
Also. The protagonist? Yeah, She drove me INSANE. She's supposed to be a sixteen year old girl who takes a shine to a new classmate......Well in JUST TWO DAYS. TWO DAYS PEOPLE... Her feelings for him are so strong she can hardly contain them! She must tell him, and fast. For fear she may explode! (I'm pretty sure that's actually in the book.) Like Come. On...
Ugh.
Also I just want to say, The story line is great! I really enjoyed it. However.
The word choices throughout the entire volume were pretty infantile. Example,
"I like him." "I wonder if he likes me?" "Oh no. I don't think I can handle it if he doesn't like me..."
IF YOUR GONNA BE LIKE THAT, JUST WRITE HIM A FREAKING 'CHECK BOX IF YOU LIKE ME' NOTE.
Another reason she drove me nuts was because I felt that she was very self-deprecating. She was constantly telling herself "I'm just not brave enough." "I can't do it." *sigh* Which made me upset, because she didn't even try. I mean, what ever happened to The Little Engine That Could?
RAR! (<- that's a terrifying roar of frustration, FYI.)
Last but not least, I have one last thing to complain about. In the beginning I did have a little trouble following the story, and I think it was mainly because of the (Japanese?) names. Soooo, not really anyone's fault but mine, but still.
OKAY! I think that just about concludes this review. If your a little confused on why I rated this 3.5 stars even though I didn't enjoy it very much... My reasoning was that I really do like the story line, and it DID suck me in enough to want to keep reading.
